How Wyndham Gets Social for Charity

Just in time for Christmas Wyndham Worldwide, one of the world’s largest hospitality companies, has announced that through its ”social good" campaign the company’s Wishes by Wyndham philanthropic program will donate $60,000 to be equally divided between its three signature charities: the Association of Hole in the Wall Camps, Christel House International, and Starlight Children’s Foundation™.

During the three-month Facebook campaign that began in August, Wyndham Worldwide pledged to donate $1 to its signature charities (up to $60,000) for every new person that “liked” the Wyndham Worldwide Facebook page. Through the campaign, Wyndham Worldwide gained almost 5,500 Facebook fans, who shared nearly 7,000 Facebook posts and tweets about the program.

“As a result of the great response from the social community and in the spirit of social good, we decided to donate the full $60,000 to our signature charities,” said Mary Falvey, executive vice president and chief human resource officer of Wyndham Worldwide. “This campaign not only gave us a great opportunity to provide additional funding to our signature charities, but it also allowed us to extend awareness of these great organizations within the social community. Social media has the power to inspire others to take action and we hope this campaign inspired people to support Wyndham Worldwide’s mission to help children around the globe.”

In line with Wishes by Wyndham's mission, each of three signature charities will use their $20,000 donation to help improve the lives of children in need.
  • The Association of Hole in the Wall Camps is an international family of camps and programs that provide life-changing camp experiences to children with serious medical conditions, free of charge.
  • Christel House, created by RCI co-founder Christel DeHann, is dedicated to improving the lives of impoverished children around the world by providing educational opportunities, community support, health care, counseling and more.
  • Starlight Children’s Foundation™ helps seriously ill children and their families cope with their pain, fear and isolation through entertainment, education and family activities.

Spend Your Christmas Vacation in our Nation’s Capital

Christmas in our nation's capital - what could be more beautiful or more profound for Americans? Rent a budget timeshare at the Wyndham Old Town Alexandria resort, hop the metro conveniently located just across the street, and take your family into Washington, D.C. for a wonderful Christmas vacation experience.

The first must-see is the Capitol Christmas Tree put up and decorated on the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol. This tradition started in 1964 and today the trees are provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service. The 2009 tree is an 85 foot blue spruce, harvested from the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests in northeastern Arizona. The children of Arizona will make the 5,000 ornaments used to decorate the tree.

The second must-see is the National Christmas Tree, across the street from the White House on the Ellipse. The tradition of lighting a national Christmas tree goes all the way back to 1923. The current tree is a 40-ft blue spruce that was transplanted to its present site in 1978.

In 1954 a "Pathway to Peace" was created by planting 56 smaller trees surrounding the National tree. These trees represent the 50 states, 5 territories, and the District of Columbia. All of the trees are decorated and brightly lit for the Christmas holiday season. Each year sponsoring organizations from each state provide tree decorations that are encased in protective plastic globes to shield them from the weather.

Other Christmas displays on the Ellipse this year include a Yule log and a model train. And for the first time there will be Santa's Workshop where youngsters are invited to tell Santa their Christmas wishes. You can also enjoy holiday entertainment each evening of the week on the Ellipse stage where happy Christmas music is performed by volunteer choirs, bands, and dancers.

Candlelight tours, complete with seasonal music and holiday treats, are available in several Washington, D.C., neighborhoods. Choose the Candlelight Tour at Sully Historic Site that is held at an elegant 1794 mansion; the Candlelight Tour at Belair Mansion and Stable; and even right outside your timeshare resort is the Historic Alexandria Candlelight Tours hosted at five festively decorated historic sites in Old Town.

The American History Museum has many displays of Christmas celebrations from the colonial times to the present. Or have a truly unique Christmas experience by ice skating through the Sculpture Garden, just across the street from the National Gallery of Art. And one of the most popular places to visit is the magnificent Washington National Cathedral that pulls out all the stops for Christmas with a full schedule of services, concerts, and even craft workshops.

Your week will be full as you enjoy these and many other holiday activities and sights in Washington, D.C. This will be a special Christmas vacation that your family will remember for years to come. See all timeshare rentals.

Plan a Historic Vacation in Virginia

Alexandria is recognized around the nation as one of America's most historic sites, dating back to the Colonial period. Feast your eyes on the beautiful 18th- and 19th-century architecture as you stroll around the quaint town. Alexandria played a vital role in the history of America, so you’ll want to visit many of the amazing and historic sites located throughout the city. The Old Town district alone includes more than 4,000 historic buildings. Getting around Alexandria is simple with plenty of transportation options like metro and trolleys, so you won’t need a rental car.

Alexandria was the home to George Washington. Visit his beautiful riverside estate at Mount Vernon and see the: mansion, outbuildings, tomb, working farm, and new visitor facilities with 25 galleries and theaters. Gadsby's Tavern was frequented by both Thomas Jefferson and George Washington. The museum consists of two buildings, the 1785 Georgian tavern and the 1792 City Hotel, and has been authentically restored to its 18th-century appearance.

Alexandria is so convenient because it’s just a short walk away from the Washington D.C. transit system where you can visit the White House, Smithsonian, Pentagon, Arlington National Cemetery, and many other D.C. attractions. You’ll want to stay at least a week in Alexandria to visit all the historic sites both Virginia and Washington D.C. have to offer.

Stay at the Wyndham Old Town Alexandria, located in the heart of Old Town Alexandria, to be at the center of the cities activity.
