Travel to Hawaii’s Pacific Islands Arts Festival

One of the most eagerly anticipated events in Hawaii is the annual Pacific Islands Arts Festival. Generally held the third weekend in January, the Festival takes over Kapiolani Park directly across from the Honolulu Zoo at the Diamond Head end of Waikiki.

This is a perfect opportunity to rent a timeshare on Oahu, and really enjoy traditional arts, crafts and foods of the Polynesian islands. Arts and handcrafted products of over 100 island artisians are proudly displayed for public viewing and purchase. The artisians are members of the Handcrafters and Artisians Alliance, a group that was formed in 1999 to facilitate the sale of their exquisite products to visitors and local Hawaiians alike. Most members make their entire living by selling their artistic creations, and rely heavily on the popular Pacific Islands Arts Festival.

The Hawaiian-inspired products include jewelry, clothing, stained glass, ceramics, quilts, wood products, and candles. Each product is displayed for sale personally by the artist. This is a unique opportunity to meet and visit with the artists themselves.

The Festival also includes entertainment such as Hula dancers and a celebration of the Chinese Lion Dance. Demonstrations by individual artists include Hawaiian quilt making and jewelry creation. You'll be able to watch numerous artists working on and completing paintings right there in the park. There are even opportunities to participate - learn how to make a flower lei to take home, and the youngsters will undoubtedly be delighted to get a (temporary!) Hawaiian tattoo!

Of course, no festival is complete without good food, and plenty of traditional Hawaiian dishes are available. Be daring and try the many delicious examples of Polynesian cooking, including lomi lomi salmon, succulent khaula pork wrapped in Ti leaves, pipikaula (a type of beef jerky), and for dessert the amazing haupai, a square of coconut jelly that practically melts in your mouth. See Oahu timeshares.

If you don't go to this Pacific Islands Arts Festival you'd never believe the incredible Polynesian things you can buy. I was like a kid in a candy shop.
